The key part—and that part that is this hint—is to turn the device upside down. That's the only way it'll stick in landscape. Turning it the other way, to right-side-up, will put it back into portrait.

Yep, that's the key bit of the hint -- without the upside down part, the phone is likely to want to rotate again.

Unfortunately some developers try to be smarter than their users, and some apps override this. iEijiro (EN-JA dictionary), for one, will rotate even 180 if "necessary". Incredibly annoying.
