Also, the numbers will pop up to Spanish ordinal numbers: 1° and 1a (the a is supposed to be superscripted).

Ordinals on Mac

You mean 1º and 1ª. They have always been available on Mac keyboards, on Option-zero and Option-9. What you typed, Shift-Option-8, is the degree sign.
