Help locate iPhoto photos taken with non-GPS cameras
Great tip, that I use often. Only problem is that the 3G iPhone uses assisted GPS and requires a data connection, so it can't be used in another country unless data roaming is turned on (and exorbitant roaming charges are accepted).

Whats even better is to do this, Take a bunch of photos with your regular camera, then take a photo with your iPhone camera you will use this pic for location data. Import your camera pics into iPhoto and then import your single iPhone photo. Right click the iPhone pic and select "copy". Then select all your pics taken by your camera and right click on the first pic and select "paste location" from the list. This will assign the location data from the iPhone pic to all the pics taken by your regular camera.

I read this comment twice and it looks exactly the same as the original hint.

Actually, data roaming is only required for the Google maps data. On a recent trip to Scotland I had data roaming turned off, but the GPS still worked. I would get a little blue dot on a completely blank map screen. However, pictures taken with the iPhone were correctly geotagged and once downloaded into iPhoto accurately displayed the locations where they were taken.
This photo was taken on at Point Neist on the Ilse of Skye and was properly geotagged without data roaming: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jim_weirich/3574274261

Nope, not as long as thw GPS can get a fix! If it can't, then you are right because it then needs to look for radio towers & wifi and ask the online service where you are. But GPS is GPS - TomTom's also don't needed a network connection!

Ah.. thanks for the corrections. I tried this in China and HK, and none of the photos there were geotagged, so I ASSumed this was due to the lack of data connection. At £6/MB, I was taking no chances! (Data roaming and Location services turned off, but always connected to a mobile network). Perhaps I just didn't give it enough time to acquire a GPS signal. |
