WINS server doesn't work in 10.2
Authored by: sjonke on Aug 30, '02 10:21:03AM

As reported at macwindows.com and as I found out the hard way on my own, 10.2 does not currently use the WINS server even though you can enter one. You can't get out of your local workgroup. Didn't Apple say they were ahead of schedule on Jaguar? Stuff like this and the various other problems I've run in to with 10.2 make me think 10.2 shouldn't have been released yet. It's the first OS update that I'm NOT recommending others install. 10.1.5 is much more robust and stable. If you haven't installed 10.2 yet, I recommend waiting until 10.2.1 or later when the real 10.2 will stand up.

Good...I thought I was the only one getting this problem. I entered our WINS servers' IP address and then when I went back to the workgroup, it only showed that system...lame! They should block unusable features...I wasted a lot of time on thinking I was somehow setting it up wrong.

Does anyone have any idea how to properly set up Active Directory access via LDAP v3? I added it but my Active Directory server denies access to the administrator.

Well, I removed the WINS server option as it did filter out the rest of the computers in the workgroup. Despite having removed it, it still takes some time for the normal list to appear, even if smbclient or smbutil reports the computers properly.

Oh well. I still use SWAT or edit the smb.conf directly, though. Much more options to tweak.
