I think these are other ways to tell if QE is active:
  1. If the cursor has a shadow in the Finder, QE's active.
  2. In Desktop preferences, have it switch the image every few seconds. If the images fade from one to the next, QE's on. If they just suddenly change, no QE.
  3. If you play a dvd, pull a menu down and can see the dvd playing through the menu, QE's active.
This is starting to sound like Jeff Foxworthy. "If you're getting transparancies and shadows, you just might be a QE user." ;)

The cursor shadow thing is not a reliable indicator. Many users reported having the shadow even when Quartz Extreme is not active.

And some users (like me) have a Quartz Extreme accelerated display (or several accelerated displays) and no mouse shadow.
