I think (but have not tested) that, even on separate accounts, parental controls still proxy's everything. (that's how it works). So, even with a separate account, the mere act of having parental controls on would break gmail, unless added to the always allow list.

I don't know if I understand what you mean by "proxy's everything". However, I can attest from experience that on my computer, I have four accounts (me, my wife, and two kids). I turned parental controls on for just the kids' accounts and have had no issues whatsoever with my wife and I's accounts.
