Possibly scan documents using iPhone/iPod Touch
Good idea, but in practice things like this (printing from a handheld is another example), fall into the "cool but not useful" category :(

When I first read the title, I had images in my head about scanning fingers for prints, or barcodes for recognition. I suppose in theory, you could use a network scanner and an iPhone with some custom verification application to create a homemade barcode scanner or something along those lines.

My buddy has an Android phone that can do exactly what you imagined: scan a barcode, and do something useful with it. He can scan the barcode of a book I'm carrying, and up comes an Amazon page where he can buy it, for example.

It's not useless. If you need to go straight from device to handheld or handheld to device, this can save a step. And it isn't very unreasonable to consider a situation where the computer attached to the device cannot communicate with the handheld (e.g., you don't have the connection cable, and the computer is not wifi enabled).

I probably should have said "generally useless" rather than "useless". I agree it's not impossible to have a need for this, but it's unlikely for most people. The point I was really trying to make was that it's cooler than it is useful, not so much that it'll never have any use for anyone.

Opening and shutting the DVD tray with the remote is quite useful, for entertainment really, when you have 2 year-olds and/or cats.

It also confuses the hell out of non-techy people if you open the tray just before they press the eject button, but I doubt those were the uses the designers had in mind!!

I dis-agree with Mac Berry, and agree with Chimerical; this is a useful hint.
My network printer is not near a computer, my iPhone is always in my pocket, and I scan a good number of items. I used to run back and forth. Not every hint will be useful for every person, but there is a reason Rob publishes the hints he does. Rycardo

I think you need to re-arrange your office ;) If you scan that much, using the tiny iPhone screen surely isn't convenient, unless you only ever accept full page/default scan areas I guess, and want everything on your iPhone anyway. |
