iCal calendars, the '&' character, and clickable URLs

I look forward eagerly to the day when our computers don't require us to remember which special characters aren't allowed. Computers are supposed to work for *us*, but when we have to remind ourselves not use ampersands or slashes, we've begun working for *them*.

If it's on the keyboard, we should be able to use it in anything we type, anywhere.

Is that an unreasonable expectation? Maybe. I could accept one or two "disallowed characters" if they were consistently disallowed on nearly all operating systems, but, really, why must we continue to do that?
