Make iTunes play louder...

I also wondered why my wife's iBook was louder than my Macbook. Thanks for this.

As for 'distortion', come on guys, this is MP3s through 1cm speakers in a plastic box. If you can't even hear the bloody file, distortion is irrelevant. If I want to listen to quality I wouldn't be listening to MP3s.

The distortion isn't irrelevant. The fact that you're not getting significant distortion after bumping up the preamp suggests that most of your music was recorded with a low average volume.

Remember, +3 dB is twice as loud. +12 dB is 16 times the volume. Basically, you're taking 4 bits of your 8 bit audio and throwing it away. Why not re-record everything in 4-bits?

Here's betting you'll back that slider off from +12 dB in a few days, weeks or months.
