How to clean the Mighty Mouse's scroll ball

I used the upside-down-on-paper method & it worked -

I rolled it around for about 5 minutes being sure to regularly move to clean portions of the paper because lot's of gunk did fall out. Once this was done, I saw there was a lot of gunk built up around the rim of the ball so I turned it upside down over my head and used a flathead micro-screwdriver to scrape the edges. Then I used a moist screen wipe and vigorously rubbed the ball for another couple of minutes, again upside-down.

Now it works perfectly... like new.

I think the key here is regular maintenance. Obviously, everyone periodically cleans their computer, screen and keyboard (especially Mac users - I know I want to keep my $2500 investment looking as gorgeous as the day I bought it). So, whenever you wipe down your machine, whether that's once a day, week, month, whatever, take an extra 3 - 5 minutes to clean the trackball. I know I will.

Depends on the level of grime

Normally, I can clean the MM scrollball by the paper/moistened cloth method. A bit of compressed air can also be helpful. But today, it was so dirty that 10 minutes of cleaning didn't fix it. I found that rolling the ball on some adhesive tape was enough to clean it. Better yet, I remembered that I have some two-sided ("double-stick") tape. I put a small piece on my desk and rolled the mouse along for a few minutes. Voila, now the scrollbar works perfectly.
