How to use a new iPod with an old Mac

There is no good reason for the new iPods to be restricted to iTunes 8, and there is no good reason why a modern iPod cannot work with an old version of iTunes running on OS 9. Apple could say, "To get the best experience with our new iPods, iTunes 8 is required." while still allowing the new iPods to work with earlier iTunes versions. For most of us, iPods are just song players: they don't need Genius playlists, color video, calendar and contact synchronizing, games, etc.

Apple computers are known for their longevity (when I donated my 1983 512kE Mac in 2003, it still worked perfectly), but Apple ignores that fact when it comes to iPods. Apple uses iPods as drivers of new computer sales and unnecessarily restricts their ability to connect to different versions of iTunes. That approach might get Apple a few more sales, but at the cost of annoying some loyal customers.
