Just a little quibble: it's not that Apple supports "really old" versions of windows while not supporting much newer versions of its own OS, it's that Apple only supports one previous release of either operating system. It's not Apple's choice that Microsoft never updates :)

There is no good reason for the new iPods to be restricted to iTunes 8, and there is no good reason why a modern iPod cannot work with an old version of iTunes running on OS 9. Apple could say, "To get the best experience with our new iPods, iTunes 8 is required." while still allowing the new iPods to work with earlier iTunes versions. For most of us, iPods are just song players: they don't need Genius playlists, color video, calendar and contact synchronizing, games, etc.

The 512ke was introduced in 1986, but I see your point. I also understand the business decision by Apple, but I'd rather see them "trust" their loyal users to upgrade because of new feature benefits rather than iPod incompatibility. Ahhh the good 'ole days:

Bunk. You have no idea of the inner workings of the new iPod software, so your statement is nothing more than whining. You don't want to upgrade your machine or your OS? Fair enough. Quit whining because the rest of the world doesn't accommodate your decision.
