Open parent folder in a new window
I may be dense but I don't see the point of this hint. I use Leopard and open my Finder windows in list view and I just select "Always open folders in a new window" from the Finder Preferences General tab and then I don't need to worry about the parent folder, it's at the bottom of the cascaded windows.

I used to keep that setting too, until I discovered that if I give it up, I can easily limit my spotlight searches to the contents of the frontmost Finder window. That outweighed the need for the OS 9 behavior. This hint may help mitigate what you lose by turning "open in a new window" off.
Open parent folder in a new window
I kept "Always open folder in a new window" checked for a long time as well, because I was used to the behavior in the classic Mac OS. What changed my mind is the behavior of command-f if the option is not selected. if it isn't selected, then the choice to restrict the search to nested items of the frontmost window's folder is available in the toolbar when you press command-f. Rob Griffiths told me he thinks that difference in behavior is a bug, and submitted a report about it.
