I also listen to audiobooks at high speed on my 60gb. In addition to audiobooks, though, I really enjoy listening to podcasts at high speed. In order to do that, the typical MP3 file needs to be converted. I use the a script to convert them. Here's my workflow This process also removes the podcast from iTunes podcast folder which I prefer. One reason is that it allows me to rate the podcast while on the iPod. For some reason, files that are actually flagged podcast (not the same as podcast genre) can't be rated on the iPod though they can in iTunes.

Ok, so I think there is a lot of confusion about this or maybe I’m not understanding everything properly. From my experience, you do not need to convert audios to a different format in order to save playback position OR to take advantage of the speed up playback position.

All you need to do is to convert the media kind to an audiobook.

Go to "Get Info" for the file you would like to exhibit audiobook properties and then click on the "Options" tab

What you suggest covers it; this hint what just written long before iTunes allowed you to do that.
