One way to disable the iPhone's typing auto-correct
This does not work for me on 2.0.2 firmware. If I keep the system language as English and just enable a QWERTY Japanese keyboard, I then get offered word suggestions in both Japanese and English text. The auto-correction is clearly not disabled.
That said, the hint may be applicable to pre-2.0 firmware where the language support was a subset of what it is now. Also, as far as I can see, the supported languages list now matches the supported keyboard configurations so in theory all keyboards will offer auto-correction in the associated native language. As to those asking why you would want to turn-off the feature, put yourselves in the shoes of a user in the Czech Republic where the iPhone is sold without local language support. You would immediately see that sending an SMS or writing an email in Czech language is somewhat frustrating! Perhaps the list of supported languages will grow with the 2.1 update.

the interface language is not the issue as I run in English interface (with 2.0.2 BTW). What is important however is that you DISABLE the English keyboard after you enable the Japanese one, and then use the Jpaanese QWERTY keyboard for your roman typing. |
