10.5: Two-way synch Google Calendars and iCal
Authored by: Shawn Parr on Aug 11, '08 11:52:43AM

I have had the same experience. I read somewhere, but don't remember where, that Sync Services treats CalDAV calendars as though they are read-only, just like a subscription calendar, which is why if you try to add an event to one of these calendars on the iPhone it creates a new calendar.

Of course this also explains why if you use MobileMe all of the CalDAV calendars pretend not to exist at all on the iPhone.

As far as iCal, Google, and web integration goes I find this all to be working very well. I do find it very unfortunate that apparently Apple seems to think that any calendaring beyond one or two local only calendars is not necessary. 'Exchange for the rest of us' - Not exactly. Apparently the marketing genius that thought that up has not only not used Exchange, but even heard about what it is like to use it. Not that I like Exchange, but you can publish, subscribe, and share calendars with it.
