Exactly what are "Location Services"?

I don't have an iPhone *sob*, but I'm sure I've seen this in the arcane menu system of my current phone...

I believe Location Services is the automatic reporting of your location when you call 911.

Location Services allow applications to use GPS to amplify them. An example would be allowing the iPhones camera to provide location data that can be added to the picture, known as geotagging (here is a picture of a bridge and this is where I am when I took it). Other examples of Location Services (or location based services) would be; turn-by-turn navigation, real-time traffic updates, finding the nearest restaurant, and locating people on a map displayed on your iPhone!
