It's also been suggested that turing off "location services" in Settings --> General --> Location Services greatly helps out with battery preservation.

I have not tried this, but possibly the GPS is trying to maintain a frequent/constant connection?

Yes before I turned off the location services it was pulling my battery life in half.

Location Services is the bridge between applications and GPS. It simply provides GPS data to your applications. It will not 'deactivate' the GPS.
