Cheap MX400, moderate success
Authored by: JorgeElCurioso on Aug 11, '02 12:20:09AM

I found the ASUS V7100 on compuvest.com for $36, so I figured it'd be worth a cheap shot at flashing. The card worked without flashing in both OS 9.2 and 10.1.5 (I got clear video to my VGA monitor, and could change between a few resolutions and refresh rates in Control Panels/System Prefs). I tried flashing it with the Mac and the PC according to the instructions at cybercoment.com. Both methods had no results. But in OS 9, adding NVIDIA's extensions did the trick; now Unreal Tournament runs smooth with all graphics settings maxed.

The problem is that in OS X, any 3D apps run like molasses. I'll get a couple frames, a second's delay, quick flash of gray, then another couple frames, and so on. I don't know enough about X yet to figure out how to do any driver updating. Still, I'm amazed that a forty dollar card would work so well with so little work on my part.

Any gurus have a clue how I can fix, or at least monkey around with, the 3D problem? Maybe some sort of OpenGL settings?
