Mavericks - Finally a service to open a terminal from a specific folder System 10.9
Right mouse click and choose Services > New Terminal at Folder

I've tried different apps to be able to open a Terminal shell from a specific folder. Finally in Mavericks you can add a Service to do that. In System Preferences choose Keyboard and then Shortcuts. From the left side nav, choose Services. Then from the main area under Files and Folders, choose New Terminal at Folder and/or New Terminal Tab at Folder. Now you can right mouse click or control click on a folder and choose Services > New Terminal at Folder.

Excellent. Is there a way to do this for the current Finder window folder or just for a selected folder?

Whenever I want to open a Terminal window with the location of a folder, I am already in that folder and not one level up. That's why I don't use a service, but a toolbar app.
I made it from a script based on the OpenTerminalHere script from Marc Liyanage.

I put the app in Finder's toolbar and clicking it opens a Terminal window with the location of the window I am currently in.
You can download the app here:

PS: And yes, you can still add apps, files and folders to Finder's toolbar in Mavericks. Just hold the command key while dragging.

I'm pretty sure this was in 10.8, too.

I wasn't seeing this option on my Mavericks until I went to "System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts > Services" and checked the options for "New Terminal at Folder" and "New Terminal Tab at Folder".

Unfortunately the service doesn't seem to honor iTerm2 as the default terminal, and only opens up Terminal.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to make it honor the default terminal or modify the service to open up iTerm?

It also goes without saying within the System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts tab > Services > New Terminal <tab> at Folder you can select the item and select the add shortcut button and assign a keyboard shortcut for those of you who would prefer to avoid clicking with a mouse pointer. :-)

It also goes without saying that this was already in place in the prior system, possibly even before that.

Still a handy hint.

DTerm

You might want to check out DTerm. You can open a terminal in the current folder for any application or quickly perform terminal tasks in a drop-down window.

This is not the first hint of late "announcing" something that's been in OS X since Lion, and which has already appeared in the hints.
Bit of editorial assessment, please?

You can also just drag a folder to Terminal in the dock or toolbar to open a new terminal in that directory.

I'll put in a good word for https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/24105/cd-to, which is a finder toolbar app that's super fast.
