Mavericks - Change resolution of headless Mac Mini System
Finally after updating to Mavericks I thought I'd have another crack at changing the resolution of my headless Mac mini without using the VGA adapter hack. It is now much easier, as long as you know the trick to it.

First off you need an app to change the screen resolution (scrutil no longer worked for me so I downloaded Display Menu (free) from the Mac App Store).

After changing the display resolution my VNC/Screen Sharing sessions kept blacking out and I couldn't see anything so I fired up SSH and killed the screen sharing agent (killall ScreensharingAgent) and bam finally my remote screen lit up at my specified resolution (2560x1440). However my Dock was still in the middle of the screen (and killing the Dock seems to reset the resolution), so just right clicking the dock and changing its location made it fix itself up :)

Sadly screen sharing performance is still slow as it was in 10.8. Unless you build your own display adapter dongle with a resistor or attach a monitor which kind of makes the headless Mac not-so-headless…

Wow, I never realised how much of a difference having the adapter left in makes... It's a shame we can't use airplay display mirroring for VNC although it's capped at 1080p there's almost no lag :P

I can't remember if the problem was just changing the resolution or was it actually having VNC access at all? I've been running 10.8 headless without a vga hack for a while now, but never tried to change the resolution. I have a monitor hooked up to it right now because my main machine is off for the weekend, so I'll have to try again next week.

Thanks for posting - thought I was going nuts. I have a "headless" mac mini as well (media server, security cams and automation) - but BEFORE I install Mavericks I could still switch between resolutions for the mac mini (no display installed) and also select from a list. Now I only have on resolution - it's like AirPlay took over???

I can confirm that the dongle method works perfectly and is probably the least complicated. However, if you don't have a genuine apple VGA adapter you may have issues. I solved mine by using 3 resistors instead of one. The ports are: 1-6, 2-7 and 3-8. See the post in this thread for more info. I also use 1/4A 100Ohm resistors and they worked fine.

Hi,
I'mm the admin of several mac minis : 3 headless, 2 with monitor

the main PAINFULL issue for me is the screen filled with black, and that the mouse or a window moving clean that "black fog" on its path, leaving a trail... when controlling via remote desktop (apple integrated, or log me in... same bahaviour)
but some softwares got an issue about their refresh, like firefox for instance...
if I plug a monitor, this behavior go away, if I unplug, 10 or 15 minutes after startup, the black screen and the refresh issue is back...

2 of the 3 headless are impacted by this, and none of the one with monitor attached, all on ML 10.8.5

any clue ?
thanks
