Unlock an iOS device with a Bluetooth keyboard iOS devices

When you lock your iPhone or iPad with a passcode, the general process for using your device is that you hit the sleep/wake button or the Home button, slide to unlock, and then tap in your passcode. But, as our old friend David Chartier pointed out at Finer Things, you can skip a step if you use an external Bluetooth keyboard.

Presuming your keyboard is already paired to the iOS device, you don't even need to touch the iPad or iPhone at all to unlock it. Press a key on your keyboard to wake the device up, and then typing in your passcode. The iOS device understands what you're trying to do, and jumps to the passcode entry screen automatically.

Once you finish typing in your code, your iOS device is unlocked and ready to go.

I've been doing this for a while now. I thought it was general knowledge.

It does work differently on the iOS 7 betas, though. Bluetooth only wakes from sleep and brings you to password entry screen (as before), but it no longer brings up the password entry screen from the lock screen if the device isn't locked. (I don't think that's covered by NDA, but if it is, forget you heard it from me...!)

Nice to see at least some useful uses for the BlueTooth keyboard, but does anyone know yet how to "Send" an SMS or iMessage with it?

Maybe this is a "Duh" comment, but this hint works even if the iOS device is NOT passcoded. Tapping any key of the bluetooth keyboard brings the screen to life.

stupid "answer a question" system
Authored by: j-beda on Aug 26, '13 08:56:36PM

Boy - that "answer a question before we let you see the page" it really annoying. It may prevent me from participating in this forum in the future.

Every time I click to read the comments, I get thrown to the start of the comments, and they are all blanked out, and I have to page back up to the top and answer some stupid survey questions, which I am now just selecting the first option, thus poisoning the collected data, before I can get to reading the comments.

If you are going to have this shitty system, at least don't make me page up to answer the stupid questions - bring them right to my on the first link and have me jump to the comments after I've given you the data.

If this keeps up, I will end up no longer reading any of the comments and thus also no longer add any of my own comments, and I cannot be alone in this type of behaviour. No readers will mean no submitters and the value of this will greatly decrease both to the site owners and the wider community.

Please rethink how this is implemented. I fear the current system will lead to the death of the Mac OS X Hints brand.
