Disable Caps Lock, or at least get a warning when it's on System 10.8
Few of us ever REALLY want Caps Lock turned on; when we do hit it, we do so accidentally. There are workarounds.

You can just disable the key entirely, of course. To do so, go to System Preferences, and choose Keyboard. Then click the Modifier Keys button at the lower right of the Keyboard tab. Finally, set Caps Lock to No Action (or, alternatively, have it pull side duty as a bonus Control, Option, or Command key).

That's a great solution for those of us who only ever trigger Caps Lock unintentionally. But what about folks who genuinely want the option to quickly enter a mode for NONSTOP CAPITALIZATION, yet still want to avoid entertaining said mode accidentally? For those troubled typists, the solution is a free utility called CapSee. It displays an unmissable on-screen indicator when you're in Caps Lock mode. ISN'T THAT GREAT?

Personally I really appreciate PCKeyboardHack. I've got Caps Lock functioning as an extra Escape key.

I second the vote for PCKeyboardHack. Swapping the Caps Lock and Escape keys is one of the most useful interface improvements I have found.

Thirded.

I've got Caps Lock remapped as another escape-type key, and have put lots of neat keystrokes. So now my CapsLock-D will insert today's date as 2013-08-06.

Very handy!

CapSee is a great idea, however I wish the icon stayed on the screen for as long as the CapsLock key was depressed. What happens if you hit that key without looking? You'd still be in the same boat. Hopefully that feature could be added as an option.

Too bad it doesn't work like the Eject key. I don't mind the latching functionality of the Caps Lock key, but it would be nice if it didn't do anything until you held it down for awhile.

This seems rather pointless to me.

If you're going to be looking at the screen anyway, I would have thought the biggest clue to the capslock being on would be all the all the uppercase letters. Which are likely to be where you are looking anyway.

Presupposing one takes the time to learn how to type. My wife will struggle for hours trying to do something in an app rather than spending half that time just watching a video [luckily, she's not a denizens of this site].. Same with typing. We live on computers these days. Not knowing how to touch type is a serious handicap.

OTOH, I love remapping the keyboard. Handy when drawing.

The best solution in my opinion is the former keyboard function on NeXT computers, that is unfortunately not available on OSX any more and I never (!) inadvertently activated Caps Lock over the years working with NeXT Computers.

The solution is: For activation you have to press Shift and hold and than press Caps Lock. For deactivation simple press Caps Lock.

After that solution existed before, it should be easy to implement it, at least as an option, in keyboard preferences.

The Caps Lock key should be a Control key like God/Sun intended.

I always thought caps lock should be on a knife switch. In the basement. For the whole building.

Instead, where caps lock is usually placed would make a dandy delete key.
