More easily ignore unwanted calls to your iPhone Phones
You can identify unwanted calls. I still have a land line, but I am forwarding all calls to my iPhone. To identify unwanted calls (new windows, green energy, political adds...), I created a Contact named Don't Answer.

When I answer the phone and it is one of those annoying calls, if the number shows up, I can just use the 'add to existing contact' feature. Of course, this doesn't work if the number is blocked. But, in two weeks, I have a long list of calls that show up as Don't Answer and I can just not answer or choose Decline—there's no guesswork involved.

Lex adds: I do something similar for another reason. I use Google's two-factor authentication, and Google uses a variety of phone numbers to text me my passcode when I log in. So I created a Google entry in my contacts, and add each different number the company texts me from to that contact. That way, instead of ending up with lots of old entries from Google in Messages, there's just one that all their texts get grouped in.

iOS 7, of course, will provide a way to block specific unwanted callers, too. But this hint makes a nice stopgap!

I set up a silent iPhone ringtone for a Contact named "SPAM" and add such callers to that list. No noise, no bother. It will be nice if iOS 7 will have a specific function to do likewise. My landline has a phone that responds to a list of specified callers by answering with a busy signal and hangup. Unfortunately, it won't mute the ring completely since CallerID has to process the number first.

You know about Google Authenticator, right? No need to use SMS for two-factor authentication on iOS.

This has actually worked to eliminate nearly all unwanted calls for me:

Answer the call, politely interrupt the person and say the magic words: "Please put me and this number on your do not call list"

They say thank you very much and that it may take two weeks to become affective, and then they hang up. Any other response is apparently illegal.

In the UK this is not in the least bit effective despite all the legislation...as these companies just ignore the request. Worse still once they have confirmation that the number is answered the number is then sold onwards to other cold callers. Not helped by the fact that by large corporates (namely insurance companies), and allegedly even government departments and the police also "sell on" contact details to these companies.

I made a ringtone of 30 seconds of silence to go along with the Do Not Answer contact. I don't even notice the calls until later.

Switch your number to Google voice. It's free and has call screening. You can also click "Block" on the number and next time they call it says your line is disconnected. Works like a charm

Really interesting! I had to keep my phone on silent for a long time just because of these annoying calls as I wasn’t aware of this thing before but now I am also doing the same thing and it’s working well.

The Netherlands has an excellent government sponsored "Bel-Me-Niet" ("Don't Call Me") service.
You simply register your phone number(s) on the Bel-Me-Niet website and all commercial Dutch companies are forbidden to call any phone number listed with Bel-Me-Niet. Simple and effective.
