How to repair damaged disks that crash Disk Utility and DiskWarrior Apps
Some damaged disks do not show up with Disk Utility and DiskWarrior, and may hang and crash such repair utilities. Yet, there is a trick to repair such broken disks using Disk Arbitrator.

1. Open Disk Arbitrator and select "Activated - Block mounts." This prevents the damaged disk from crashing the repair utilities and allows such disks to be displayed by these utilities.

2. Connect the damaged disk.

3. Open Disk Utility or DiskWarrior. The damaged disk should show now and it should not crash the repair utility.

4. Deactivate Disk Arbitrator (uncheck the Activated box). This allows the repair utility to handle the damaged disk properly (mounting it once repaired).

5. Run Disk Utility or DiskWarrior.

Then, the utility should repair the disk, or at least, mount a Preview disk (DiskWarrior), allowing you to inspect and even copy or backup some files or the full disk, reformat it and restore it.

[kirkmc adds: Well, I guess I'm fortunate that I can't test this. If anyone has any severely damaged hard disks around, and wants to try, feel free to post in the comments whether or not this works.]

I successfully recovered a hard drive which would not mount and was not visible to Disk Utility using this tip; thanks!

Sure seems like something that should be built-into all disk repair utilities.

I'm totally confused here. I cannot find the Disk Arbitrator app in any of the folders. Is there a direct link somewhere?

I had a small Western Digital external 1TB that had become unmountable because of repeated "The disk was not ejected correctly" errors (apparently a common problem on Macbooks).

It wouldn't mount on either Mac or PC even enough to re-format it. It was invisible to Disk Utility and via the Terminal.

I was all ready to send the disk in for WD warranty service when I came across this article in my RSS feeds.

This technique worked like a charm. I had to do it twice (quit Disk Arbitrator and Disk Utility and unplug the disk), but it all went smoothly.

I was even able to save the disk contents!

Nice! The only times I've had Diskwarrior fail be was when the ailing disk was simply not visible to any utility. This is a nifty tool to keep in the kit.
Thank you!

I have used this in the past to recover and access disks that Disk Warrior never could do. if Disk Warrior crashed or hung, that I knew that it would take sometime more to work on the disk, somehow being able to "skip" the bad blocks, etc so that even other utilities like Disk Warrior Techtool, etc could gain access and make the disk stable enough to recover any data and then trash it, etc.
this has always been a last resort and has almost always worked, except in extreme cases. I was happy to see this tip posted here and hope that it will others when trouble arises.

Hi, I used your technique and it almost worked DA brought up the mounted external hard drive i had an iPhoto library on it. Let me tell you what I have been doing. I open the DA App and connect my external HDD it does show up with the greyed out option in second row (Partitioned part). then I uncheck the activated box with Block Mounts then click on Mount and check the 1st 2nd and 4th and hit ok. then i run my DU App to verify or repair. It doesnt either verify or repair completely but then mount my HDD in desktop i am able to click open the folders and see the files but when i drag and drop them to my desktop it stays stuck at Preparing to copy forever.
All i want is to get my photos of my kids it is precious to me as anybody kids are precious.
Any help would be appreciated.
Do i need to mount it when external HDD shows up in DA?
