Peek inside zip archives with Quick Look System
Following yesterday's hint about a Terminal command to look inside zip archives, I was informed that there's a Quick Look generator called BetterZip that can do the same thing, but from the Finder. Install BetterZip in either /Library/QuickLook or ~/Library/QuickLook (you may need to create the folder), then log out and log in again, or relaunch the Finder.

When you select a zip archive in the Finder, and press the Space bar, the BetterZip QuickLook generator will show a graphical display of the contents of the archive. If you don't want to use the command line, and want to see what files an archive contains, this is a great way to do so.

What is this talk regarding a "hint about a Terminal command to look inside zip archives"? Clearly other people see it, but I didn't get it on my RSS feed, I don't see it in the homepage, and the link takes me... to the homepage!

It seems like it's a phantom hint!

We've seen this before, at least in comments.

A whole site aggregation of quicklook tips (culling the dead links, as there are many), would be an awesome hint.

Also, http://hints.macworld.com/comment.php?mode=view&cid=116159&query=relaunch+quicklook reccomends 'qlmanage -r' as a way to relauch quicklook. On 10.7.5 I didn't need to, it seemed to run the generator for zip files when I tried it without logging out, killing finder, or running the command.

The Odd thing is that i have no specific QL plugin for zip files, but i still can see inside them with QuickLook (running 10.8.4).
The only non-system plugin i have is QLColorCode, but i can't imagine that's what lets me see inside zip files...
Also, has anyone else noticed that ext4 partitions (Ubuntu) now automatically mount as r/w?? I noticed that since 10.8.2
Again, could be something i installed, but i can't find any culprit...

You are right, in Mountain Lion you can look inside zip files. But it's not as nice as view as when using the BetterZip plugin. For instance, it often just shows a folder in the zip archive, but not what's in the folder. I've been using the BetterZip plugin for a while now.
