Merge contacts in OS X Contacts app Apps
This isn't a hidden feature, but it's one that many people may not know. I found it recently when I discovered that I had dozens of duplicate contacts in my Contacts app, caused by quirky iCloud syncing. If you find that you have two cards for the same contact, you can select them, then choose Card > Merge Selected Cards. This will copy all unique information into a single card.

There is also a Card > Look for Duplicates command, but when you invoke it, Contacts will tell you how many duplicates it has found, and ask if you want to merge them, but won't tell you which cards were duplicates before you merge them; I'd rather do this manually so I don't lose any information.

Contacts sorely needs a "merge duplicates" UI so that you can walk one by one and choose to merge or skip. Didn't iSync do that a long time ago?

This is also the way you "link" contacts on CardDAV servers (which is how Facebook integration works)

"Linking" sounds like a good idea - how does it work? Can I "Link" a card on CalDav-server-1 with a card on CalDav-server-2 and then make a change on one card that will happen to both cards on the two servers?

I see no way to merge contacts other than using the ultimate, find duplicates. There is no selection anywhere in my contacts app that will merge 2 cards, selected or not.

In Mac OS X 10.6.8 under the Address Book.app "Card" menu item, the third selection is "Merge Selected Cards", with a keyboard shortcut of shift-command-| (which is above the "\" key on NAmerican keyboards)

The first time I tried "Merge Duplicates", the menu entry changed to "Link Selected Entries", with the same keyboard shortcut. It has yet to change back to "Merge Selected Duplicates". And it didn't merge them, either! This app is so totally FUBAR'd!

Different servers?

I expect the difference lies in the servers that the contacts live on. You should not be able to merge contacts that live on two different servers (iCloud and Google, for instance). They can only be linked. You should be able to merge two contacts that live on the same server.
