I keep all the apps I use regularly on my iOS devices in the Dock or on the home screens, but I have dozens of less-commonly used apps in folders. I often forget which folder some apps are in, even though my folders are labeled clearly. To find which folder an app is in, swipe right to display the Spotlight search screen, then type a few letters of the app's name. The app will display in the list, and to the right of its name will be the folder it's in. Next time, maybe you'll remember which folder to look in, which, for me at least, is quicker than typing in the search field.

Find which folder contains an app on iOS
Its worth noting that this only works for apps, not for web shortcuts you've saved. I have a web shortcut in a Utilities folder and to the right of a Spotlight search it only shows it as a "Top Hit". Other apps in the same folder show the folder name.

I get Top Hit for IMDb which looks like an app to me. It's not opening in Safari and the app definitely is in a folder. So something else is going on. I do get the correct folder for many apps. ---

Interesting, I see that too with the IMDB app. I wonder why some don't show their folders... ---

Find which folder contains an app on iOS
Well for the most part this hint works... BUT... it does not work for every app or perhaps combinations of apps. For example, I have VNC Lite and Pocket Cloud. What happens in that case when I enter VN for the spotlight search is that it shows VNC as the 'Top Hit' and does not show what folder it is in. It also shows Pocket Cloud and the correct folder it is in.
Requires iOS 6
On my iPod touch 4 running 6.0, this works. On my iPad 1 running 5.1.1, I only get “Top Hit” or nothing.

Apple provided apps also seem to only show "Top Hit" and not the folder that they have been stashed in.
Find which folder contains an app on iOS
Please clarify as to iOs version. Not showing up for me, iOS 5.1.1 on both iPhone 4S or iPad 2.
Find which folder contains an app on iOS
This is specific to iOS 6.

Why would you want to know the location of an app on iOS in the first place?
Find which folder contains an app on iOS
I use verb (action) titles to label my folders in IOS. Verbs like Calling, Locate, Edit, Find, Learn, Listen, Play, Read, Share, Travel, Watch etc.......

Is there a hint that tells about this in Spotlight in OS X? I don't know, I tried to release a hint for that one time, but I guess it never went through. When hovering the mouse over a result in Spotlight in OS X, if you hold down the command key, at the bottom of the search result quicklook preview, the name of the file will appear and then scroll through to the location of the file. Pretty handy for me, anyway. |
