Partition a Fusion drive Other Hardware
This is less of a hint than a heads up. I was chatting with Rob Griffiths yesterday, the creator of this web site, wondering if one can partition a Fusion drive. It turns out that you can, but only the hard drive part of it. This, and many other questions, are addressed in this Apple technical note, which is worth reading. The Fusion drive is a new technology, and has certain limitations because of the way it works, but it can be useful to see what these limitations are.

Saying you can only partition "the hard drive part" doesn't really make sense.

My understanding of the fusion drive is that you don't decide what is on the SSD nor do you access it directly. You use the drive and it (or maybe the OS) decides what to move on or off the SSD. From the file systems point of view the file is in the same place.

I would assume that if you partition the drive files from both partitions may end up on the SSD portion of the drive. If this isn't the case what you mean to say is that you can partition the hard drive but only one of the partitions work in concert with the SSD. I would be slightly surprised if this were the case but I could see it happening. (And if this is the case the tip should tell us how to specify which partition is the one that works with the SSD.)

I should have read the FAQ first.

It says that only the main partition works with the SSD. (So only one partition works with SSD and you don't get to choose).

Looking forward to the hint where you explain how to replace the DVD drive for and SSD in my MacBook Pro and get the OS to use it together with the HD as a Fusion Drive :)
