Option-click Airport menu to launch Wi-Fi Diagnostics
Sep 06, '12 07:30:00AM • Contributed by: gabester
A hint last year mentioned Wi-Fi Diagnostics, an application hidden in /System/Library/CoreServices. It turns out that you can also access this by Option-clicking the AirPort menu in your menubar and choosing Open Wi-Fi Diagnostics.

Option-click Airport menu to launch Wi-Fi Diagnostics
I'm on 10.7.4 and while option-click does provide extra information for the connected network, it doesn't provide a menu option to open Wi-Fi diagnostics.

Same here - A better hint would be to Option-Command drag the Wi-Fi diag app to your utility folder to create an easy to access shortcut.

I'd intended to submit this as a 10.8 Mountain Lion-only hit because I checked this didn't work in Snow Leopard or Lion, but at the time I submitted it I was undecided between whether it was a network or 10.8 hint and I guess I left it on the former.

But it's not new; it was there under Lion as well. Google it and you'll see. ---

Option-click Airport menu to launch Wi-Fi Diagnostics
I don't need to Google it because I have four Lion (10.7.4) machines around me in my office right now, and the option-click Open Wi-Fi Diagnostics menu option is not there on any of them. The first mention of this on Lion in Google is before Lion was released, so I believe this may have been something in the early dev builds but was then removed from the actual shipping version. Whatever the case, this should be a 10.8 hint, because it most definitely does not work on the current build of Lion on my three separate generations of laptops and desktops.

The thing I found most interesting about this is that you must option click -- not right click. In Mountain Lion it does not show up anyway. I am so used to being able to ft-click when I read opt-click but this is clearly not the case here.

Also if you option lick the Sound menu item you can choose a sound output/input source.

And doing the same for the Bluetooth, Time Machine & Sync menus also gets you lots of goodies. |
