Remove icons from the Dock in Mountain Lion System 10.8
Before OS X Mountain Lion, you could drag an icon out of the dock and and it would disappear when you let go of it. This also used to work with the Finder's sidebar entries, but Apple has removed both of these in Mountain Lion.

With Mountain Lion's Finder sidebar, you have to right-click an entry and choose Remove from Sidebar from the contextual menu.

It might appear that this is now the only way of removing icons from Mountain Lion's dock, too. But I discovered that if you drag an icon out of the dock, then hold it anywhere for a second, the first frame of the "poof" animation appears next to the cursor. When you release the mouse button, the icon will disappear.

This is a nice touch to prevent users from accidentally removing icons from the dock.

[kirkmc adds: This irked me when I finally installed the Mountain Lion GM on my main Mac. I didn't come across this drag-and-hold-a-second thing, and it's good to know. The Finder sidebar bit is annoying, and maybe the same trick will eventually work there.]

You can remove Finder sidebar items by holding down Command (⌘) button while dragging them out!

You need to drag the icon away from the Dock by quite a distance for this to work. Drag it out by only a few centimetres and the "poof" will never ever appear. THIS is what's been changed to stop people accidentally deleting Dock icons.

Drag the icon to the middle of the screen, for example, which is hard to do by accident, and the "poof" appears almost instantly.

With Finder, just hold down COMMAND after dragging the icon out of the sidebar to delete the icon. I think this was how it worked in Lion too but I might be wrong.

You're right, the poof will not appear when you drag the icon out of the dock, but not far enough. But the hold-delay is there as well: try to yank an icon from out of the dock all across the screen to the other edge and release it immediately -- it will jump back to where it was.

by the way, this "feature" has started in Mac OS Snow Leopard 10.6.8! After 10.6.8 you should hold ⌘ and drag items out of Sidebar!

Right, it even started in 10.6.8...

Kirk edited my post to say that the sidebar behaviour started in Mountain Lion, but my original wording was that it started in Lion.

Remove icons from the Dock in Mountain Lion

Removing icons *for unopened apps* was no big mystery to me...but after this morning's upgrade to Mountain Lion, what's irking ME is that some apps which offer the option to have their icons not appear in the dock (i.e., to keep them from filling up the dock because they're just open all the time on my computer) seem to no longer be able to force this to happen.

A specific example: I use an app called NewsBar to display a selection of RSS feeds along the side of my screen. In the app's preferences, there is a toggle box for "Show in Dock" which I always toggle "off" to keep the icon out of my dock. This no longer forces the icon out of my dock in Mountain Lion.

Anyone know if there's a way to remove OPEN apps' icons from the dock in Mountain Lion? Or is this something the developers of such apps will need to figure out and update?

What you are describing is having an application run in the background. This usually requires a special setting, and isn't something that can be accomplished merely by dragging an icon out of the dock. The developer has to implement this in order for it to be made possible. (Well, unless you want to hack the Info.plist inside the application bundle yourself, which will break the code signature on the application.)

Thanks for the explanation and clarification. My issue was/is that apps which previously ran as "hidden" from the the dock (but not actually "hidden" since I could see them on my desktop) seem to not necessarily be able to still do so in Mountain Lion. I'm guessing it will be up to individual developers to patch these issues...

If you drag the dock icon to the Trash icon in the dock, the Trash icon displays a "Remove from Dock" message bubble. Releasing the icon into the trash removes it from the dock. I prefer the wait and poof method, but dragging to Trash might be more intuitive for some.

Hello,

I am having issues removing icons from my doc. When I drag my icons to "Trash" it wont disappear from doc and when I drag icon to the center of the screen the "poof" appears, when I release the icon it goes back down to the doc. The only way I can remove icons is by going to the task bar and manually removing it! HELP?

Easier in Mountain Lion is just to put the cursor on the icon in the dock and hold it briefly, a menu with "options" will appear, click "remove from dock". No dragging required.
