Shift-Option modifier for fine brightness control System 10.7
In a comment to a recent hint about using the Shift and Option keys to make finer adjustments to the volume of your Mac, user monolithic pointed out that these modifier keys also work with the brightness controls, F1 and F2. I didn't know that, and it looks like there's no hint for it on the site.

So, to change the brightness just a bit, press Shift and Option, then press either F1 to lower the brightness, or F2 to increase it. Personally, I find this more useful than the volume controls, as I often would like to change by display's brightness by a half-step.

This works in 10.7.4; if it works in other versions of Mac OS X, feel free to specify this in the comments.

Also applies to the keyboard brightness controls (Macbook Pro, Lion 10.7.4).

This works for the backlit keyboard brightness controls, too.

When I first saw the post about the volume settings I thought I tried it with the brightness and keyboard backlight with no luck... Clearly I did something wrong!! Haha

This exact same hint shows up on OSX Daily (http://osxdaily.com/2012/06/09/incremental-brightness-volume-adjustments-in-mac-os-x/) on June 9, a whole two days later ... here it is on OSX Hints.

This site has really gone down hill.

And how has it gone downhill?

If you're interested, I spotted the comment to the previous hint about the volume control, then put the post in the queue for Monday, June 11. Someone else submitted it to OS X Daily before it got posted here.

So you're saying that I copied them? Or they copied this site? Does it really matter that much?

@ "Does it really matter that much?"

No!!

I'm interested in the hints...not who posted first, nor where. I don't have time to read the multitude of Apple-related web sites looking for handy little items like this but I do depend on Mac OS X Hints to find 'em and post 'em.

Criticism wasn't justified, IMO.

I am interested in the hints, but not the criticisms nor those that point out flaws. Contribute or observe.
I Agree with Kirkmc: who cares about "me first"!
Having a credible hint or solution matters.
Thanks for the Hint- It works on 10.7.4 on a MBP 15" 2009...both Brightness and Volume can use the granular setting...

Not for me under Leopard 10.5.8 on a 17" MacBook Pro (5,2).

Correct. The hint is for Lion, and mkhaw confirms it works in Snow Leopard.

Shift Option also works for keyboard backlighting for those applicable Macbook (Pro)s using F5 and F6. (The only problem being you can't discern any difference between the 1/4 increment steps).

I guess you must be referring to older Mac keyboards or PC keyboards being used on a Mac. I don't have F keys on my mac keyboard. I DO have a button on the top row for brightness.
