Easily add text to the Login window and lock screen System 10.7
To add text to the login window in Lion, there's no need anymore to use a system utility or to manually edit a plist file, as it was the case in earlier versions of Mac OS X. This can be useful to display an "If found" message.

Go to the Security & Privacy preference pane of System Preferences. Under the General tab, check the second box, "Show a message when the screen is locked," and then edit the message using the "Set Lock Message..." button.

This message displays near the bottom of the Login window or the lock screen. You can make multiple paragraphs by pressing Option-Return to go to a new line.

[kirkmc adds: This was indeed covered several times in the past, and required futzing around with .plist files. There were hints in 2002, 2005 and 2011. This method is much simpler, and deserves a mention.]

Dunno folks. A hint to me is something hidden, or otherwise unknown that requires some effort. A click box option doesn't rate for me, but OK. Not a rant as much as it is an observation.

Well, here's what the dictionary says about "hint":

noun
a slight or indirect indication or suggestion: he has given no hint of his views.
a small piece of practical information or advice: handy hints about what to buy.
a very small trace of something: Randy smiled with a hint of mockery.

I think the term "hint" in the sense of "a small piece of practical information or advice" is appropriate.

Actually, I'd say that this is hidden in a way - if I want to add text to the _login_ window, I'd probably look in the accounts prefpane, not security. And in fact the checkbox label doesn't even mention the login window, so I'd never have known it affected that as well.

and second, I've been using Mac OS for many years, and sometimes it's nice to have little new features pointed out. I explicitly go through all of the new preferences dialogs every time I run a major system upgrade (not usually point releases though) to look for new features, and I missed this one myself. And not everyone goes that far.

While it may not be new to you, it's new to others. Every hint can't please every reader.

I mostly defend against the "it's not a hint" posts. All I said was this time, it was a stretch to me. Can't someone say something without folks here getting all butt-hurt over it? Good lord. The other 98% of the stuff here is great. As I said, I wasn't ranting over it.

When I find something helpful to me on this site, I like to read the comments. I invariably find the first post to be "not a hint" or something of the sort.

I'm sorry that I didn't know about this and it took a simple "hint" to help me out. But I found this to be extremely useful and something I hadn't seen.

Thanks to the poster and the mod for publishing it.

I was wondering about this very thing last night while changing login pictures. Thanks.

Line limits

As a quick follow up -- I could only seem to get the system to accept three lines' worth of text. FWIW. Thanks for the hint!
