Connect an iPad 3 to an AppleTV via hotspot tethering iOS devices
If you have a Verizon iPad 3 and an Apple TV 2 or 3, they can connect to each other, simply by using the built-in hotspot tethering. You don't need any pre-existing network, access point, or MyFi-type hotspot. They connect to each other directly and all AirPlay functionality (including full screen mirroring) is available.

I assume that if the content you share via AirPlay is stored locally on the iPad, it won't use up any of your data quota.

[kirkmc adds: I haven't tested this, as I only have a Wi-Fi iPad. I did try setting up a personal hotspot on my iPhone, and my Apple TV sees the network, and can connect to it. But I'm not sure if this wouldn't still use data, as I don't see how to disconnect from my cell carrier (turning on Airplane Mode cuts off the personal hotspot), and the phone is still connected via 3G. (Phones do work differently from iPads.) If anyone else can test this with an iPad, please post your results in the comments. ]

This could be very useful. I would love to stream keynote presentations wirelessly in my classroom, but my university's wireless network uses browser based authentication which the AppleTV cannot access, so currently I need to set up a separate wireless router for this to work. Perhaps this is a reason to get a Verizon iPad! I wonder if anyone has found a workaround that don't require the Verizon iPad. I have an iPad 2 WiFi and wish I could set up an AdHoc network to an appleTV for streaming, but haven't figure out a way to do this.

On an iPhone you can turn off Cellular Data under Settings -> General -> Network.

Right, but when you do this, the hotspot tethering feature that my tip mentions is greyed out and unavailable. Same on the iPad.

I just tested it with my Verizon iPad 3rd gen and Apple TV, and I can confirm that it works and does not use up any cellular data. This is fantastic! I can now take my AppleTV on the road, hook it up to the TV in the hotel and stream from the iPad! Thank you for the great tip!

I tried to do the same from my computer to see if I can stream from my laptop to my Apple TV; I created a Network from my MacBook Air laptop (under Wifi, in the top menu bar), but the AppleTV doesn't see that network.
