10.7: See Exposť view of an app in the background System 10.7
This is a feature that allows you to see the Exposť of an app that is in the background. You'll need a Trackpad.

In OS X 10.7, the four-finger swipe down toggles app Exposť for the app in the foreground. Except if you place the cursor on the icon of a running app in the Dock, in which case the four-finger down swipe toggles the app exposť of THAT app, not the application that is in the foreground.

If you swipe down again without selecting a window from the Exposť view, you are taken back to the app you were in before toggling Exposť.

[crarko adds: I'd love to test this, but my Lion system is still trying to finish installing the 10.7.3 update, which has already taken considerably longer than anticipated.]

Works, but only if the foreground app is not running in full screen mode (tested under 10.7.3).

You can also achieve similar without a trackpad: Ctrl-click on the Dock icon of the running app you want to view, and select "Show All Windows" from the pop-up menu. The only difference being that you need to then click on the specific Dock icon of the app you were previously in if you wish to return to it.

Incidentally, whether you enter Exposť by swiping or clicking, subsequently clicking the Dock icons for other running apps will cycle through those apps.

You can also double-tap with two fingers on the app's dock icon. This works both with the mouse and the trackpad, whereas the four-finger swipe down won't work with a mouse.

Nice tip. On a hunch, I tried this with a minimized window, instead of a background/hidden application. Just as I hoped, there was the minimized window, making un-minimizing a click away. For many, I'm sure it will probably be a little easier than the command-tab > keep command key down > press and hold the option key > let up command key "shortcut" - it's definitely easier to explain - especially if there are several minimized windows.
