The internets suggests an easier option - in those cases when you have to start up your mac in a public place, simply hold the mute key on it while booting, which supposedly will silence the boot chime.

Does not work on mid 2010 iMac.

I have used Start Up Sound on this iMac to control a too-loud chime. Once set you don't need it any more. Appears to be written to PRAM since the pref pane no longer exists on this iMac after a clean install of Lion - But it is still working.

I can confirm: does not work on the MBP I use, the first generation Unibody, running Snow Leopard.

The one thing I miss in my Mac is the Shutdown items folder. Anything there would run at shutdown.

That was great.

Some things just shouldn't have been removed.

I know there are other ways to do this, but that was very easy - a no-brainer!

The StartNinja notes indicate that the app doesnít work with iMacs. Iíve been using a Preference Pane called Startup Sound for years. It works on iMacs, and has the added advantage of a slider for controlling the startup chime volume from full to mute.

I have, too, used StartupSound.prefPane for years and it has always worked. Currently, I have it running on a 2006 Mac Pro and 2011 MacBook Pro. Works wonderfully.

I muted it myself with the following command (in Terminal.app)...
sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume="%80"

To restore regular behavior...
sudo nvram -d SystemAudioVolume

Hope this helps someone else as much as it has me! This has worked for me for quite some time now on my old iBook and my iMac8,1... YMMV.

Why are you booting your Mac in public? That's what sleep is for! I bet you take your power supply with you for a half hour visit to the coffee shop too. Some people are so stuck in the past.

I can't get this to work on a Mac Pro (early 2008). StartupSound.prefPane used to work on Snow Leopard but not since I upgraded to Lion - @Interactive, are you sure it works for you, I thought prefPanes were disabled in Lion? I have also tried @ChaChi's nvram commands and they don't work either. And, @boxcarl, we want the chime off for lots of reasons - in my case so I don't wake the family when called out at night.

Was just about to uninstall cause it wasn't working on my MBP 02/11. Then I found this note on their website: "The system start up chime is played through the internal speaker. If speakers or headphones are plugged in the system start up chime will still play."

I was testing the app on my desk which I have external speakers plugged in. Works fine when unplugged, which is what you want when you are out in public.
