Get charge status on the iPad2 while charging iOS devices
I'm using the iPad 2's 10 Watt wall charger and wireless sync, and it works very well. The only thing that kept bothering me was how to tell how much the battery was charged without unplugging it.

Here's how: If you have the iPad's screen locked, press and hold the Home button. After a few seconds the battery charge percentage will show up next to the 'Charging' icon in the top right of the screen.

[crarko adds: I tried this with a first-generation iPad and it did nothing. However, going to Settings » General » Usage and turning on the 'Battery Percentage' slider makes the charging level always visible. Does the iPad 2 behave differently?]

Might be the iPad 2 is different. I use the bar indicator, and prefer it that way. When my iPad 2 is charging, the bar indicator is replaced with a "charging" symbol.

I tried this with my iPad 1 and it Works. It only works if 'Battery Percentage' is off and iPad is Charging. You hold Home button for 2 seconds and Battery Percentage get visible until you unlock the Screen.

The Home button is a red herring; my iPad 2 always starts displaying the battery level on the lock screen after a few seconds charging.

Note that if you've got an iPad 2 with a magnetic cover set to wake the device up, you need to press the power button to turn the screen off, then press the home or power button to get to the lock screen; the home screen will never show the battery level unless you've got it set to display all the time. You may have to hit the home/power button a couple times as the screen can turn off before the requisite charging time elapses.

Heh, this is great! I've wondered why the % disappears and I can't see it. I don't have my iPad 1 set to display percentage, but it gets displayed when you first start charging. And now if it's not displayed, it shows up when the home button is held.

Thanks for finding this.
