10.7: Viewing Email when Organized by Conversation Apps
This hint describes how to easily see all the emails in one conversation without having to open them and scroll through.

If you have your emails 'organized by conversation' you will see in the email list in the left column the number of emails in that conversation. You can just click on the email showing in the left-hand column and hit the Right arrow key. This causes all the emails in that conversation be shown in a drop-down list by date, one on each line, below the latest one. To undo the list, press the Left arrow key.

[crarko adds: This is one of those obvious shortcuts that can hide forever if not mentioned.]

I think that the command key is excessive. In my copy of mail, conversations work just like most other disclosures (e.g. in the Finder list view). Right arrow to expand, left arrow to collapse. Actually, just slightly different from the finder, because in Mail, left arrow collapses immediately no matter which message, whereas in the Finder list view, left arrow with a subitem takes you to the parent item, and then left again collapses the parent item.

I can confirm that this works with the right and left arrows without the need for holding down Command. This is also handy for programs that grab the currently selected email (like Things does to add links to the selected email). Even with one of the actual emails selected in the right pane viewing area, Things will still get the whole list of emails in the conversation. By disclosing the list in the left pane and selecting the desired message, Things is able to grab just a link to the individual message selected.

@arcticmac: Thanks for your alternate to this hint. Just tried it and it works like a charm. I gotta remember that. I need a dropdown list of handy hints. Is there any such beast? :-)

I am also finding that the right and left arrows (with no modifier keys) are enough to expand and contract the message lists in Mail. For me, holding down Control with the arrow keys (not Command as stated in the hint) does the same thing. Pressing Command and the arrow keys moves me between spaces, which is useful in its own right.

You can also just click on that little number (the number on the right side, indicating how many messages in the thread). The messages will be displayed below, nested. Click on the number again to re-nest.

For some reason this does not work for me on OS X 10.7.2.

Command + right arrow switches spaces in Mission Control. Could not find a place to turn it off.
Right arrow alone does nothing.

What am I missing?

You have to change your Mission Control keyboard bindings in the Mission Control Pref pane. Or just use the right/left arrows without commands as mentioned above.

I don't see any mention of this, possibly because it's so obvious, but just in case it helps anyone:

If you like, you don't need any arrow keys at all. You can also click on the number & disclosure triangle to reveal the list of messages in the conversation. (This is different from clicking on the visible conversation "header" itself; try it and see.)

Continuing to add obvious detail for completeness: Note that either method (arrow key or clicking) does nothing if the number of messages in the conversation is only 1 (as there are no more messages in the conversation to reveal).
