iOS 5: Repeating Tasks in Reminders iOS devices
This may not be so much a hint as a caveat.

I was thrilled to discover iOS 5.0 now allows repeating reminders until I discovered that while the iOS software (such as that on the iPad) allows repeating reminders, iCal and iCloud still DO NOT.

So, if you create a repeating reminder you need to make sure you check it off on your iOS device and NOT on iCloud or iCal -- doing so checks off the task and removes it. Checking it off on the iOS device marks it as done for that day and then automatically creates the task again at the specified repeat interval.

[crarko adds: I haven't tested this one. The hint submitter didn't mention the version of iCal being used, so if that makes any difference please note so in the comments. I'm certainly willing to believe iCloud is still undergoing improvement, and maybe this is an issue which will be corrected.]

iOS 5: Repeating Tasks in Reminders -BusyCal does sync iCloud reminders

If you use busycal instead of ical, repeating to-dos are supported and synced, according to their blog (and my limited experiments):

N.B. I'm not affiliated with the producers of BusyCal, just a satisfied customer.

I find that this is true.
Setup a repeating task in Reminders on the iPhone and when it appears in iCal Version 5.0.1 (1547.4) via iCloud sync, you can not even check it off as complete. Remove the repeating option in the task on the iPhone Reminders app and now it will accept the check off as complete.

Lucky for me I use BusyCal instead of iCal. In BusyCal, an iOS 5 repeating task can be checked off and it will also repeat.

Also repeating tasks made in BusyCal on the Mac or BusyToDo on the iPhone will not accept the check off as complete when synced to iCal via iCloud.

Hmm. I'd been using Busy Cal but wasn't sure how well it would support iCloud but now I see they released a new version that says it will. Guess it's time to go back to making that my default calendar!

When you create a reminder in iCal in Lion 10.7 there is no repeat option but if you create a repeating Reminder in iOS 5 the repeat frequency shows up in the iCal reminder body. My repeating iCal reminders are listed but not checkable. I can only check them from my iOS device. Once checked a new repeating Reminder is created and the checked off Reminder shows as completed on all platforms.

Sorry - I was the poster of the hint but didn't think to post the version number. I am using 5.0.1 of iCal.

OK, so now can someone tell me how to keep iCal from opening every time I change and event or reminder? I've closed it so I can use Busy Cal, but iCal opens every time I add a new item or edit something. Thanks!

For user: eayering
Try this. In BusyCal, go to BusyCal in the menubar and select Preferences. Click on the Advanced tab. Now in this dialog, change the default calendar application from iCal to BusyCal. Your computer should now know that BusyCal is your default calendar for any calendar/task related action.

Thanks hho26 - looked into that but Busy Cal is already selected as the default but iCal keeps popping up anyway.

Also, to all - even though Busy Cal supports repeating tasks it STILL seems if you check off a repeating task on iCloud it deletes the repeat.... So, you can check if off on your iPad, iPhone or Busy Cal but NOT iCloud....

Thanks!
