10.7: Easy package tracking in Mail Apps
Often, when you get a shipping receipt email for an online purchase, the shipper will provide the tracking number as a link, so you can easily see its progress. But this is not always the case. Fortunately, Lion's Mail app (and possibly past versions) can help.

Hover the mouse over the tracking number, and a dotted line should appear around it, along with a drop-down arrow on the right. Click that arrow, and, if a menu ensues, select 'Track Shipment.' A Quick Look panel will open with the shipment info (from the website of UPS, FedEx, etc.).

Mail will do this for you whether the tracking number is linked or not, so this hint can be helpful any time you want to check up on the shipment but don't want to switch to a browser to do so.

[crarko adds: I don't have any pending shipments to try this out with, but two people mentioned this feature works in 10.7. Will someone verify if it does or does not in Snow Leopard and post in the comments? Thanks.]

This is a Lion-only feature (and a great one at that). Doesn't appear on Snow Leopard.

It's new in Lion and iOS 5.

Yup, works in snow leopard. I've been using it for a couple years now. Love it!

hm... that's strange; I can't get it to work in Snow Leopard, and I've never noticed it before either. But there're definitely strings in the frameworks for it. Has anyone noticed any tricks or reasons that it might not work for me?

I have a vague recollection of checking for this on SL some time ago and coming to the conclusion that is was only enabled for the US??

Going off of memory, as I don't have any tracking numbers to try it out with, it did NOT work in Snow Leopard, but has been a feature in iOS Mail for some time now.

It could be true that it works in 10.6, but from my memory, it seems to me like it's new in 10.7.

Hey guys - Wow, I went back to my Snow Leopard Machine, and sure enough, 10.6.8, it doesn't work! But, I've been doing this for over a year now, and Lion hasn't been out that long... Am I getting.. what's that disease called again..uh..excuse me a moment..oh yea, Alzheimer's?

Not consistent In SL, at least

I had noticed this feature in Lion and absolutely love it--makes obsessively checking where your package is SO much easier.

I just checked, though, and the same mail message that has a UPS tracking number that I was using in Lion does not show the pop-up option in Snow Leopard at work.

So maybe the feature works in some circumstances in 10.6, but it's definitely not all the time, and I don't even think most, since I noticed it immediately in Lion and had never seen it before.

The only shipping I currently have is a DHL tracking number. And as far as I can see, it doesn't work with DHL tracking numbers. Mail recognizes the number as special, but instead of offering a tracking link, it offers me to add the number to a contact. Obviously Mail thinks it's a phone number.

It does not work in 10.6.7. I tried it with UPS tracking #'s and with common carrier Pro #'s. Bummer. :(
