10.7: Xcode updating when the installer is moved Apps
If you are like me you saw the 4 GB Xcode installer the Mac App Store dropped in the Applications folder and promptly moved it to an external drive (Xcode installed is another 8 GBs or so making its footprint around 12 GB).

I have good news for those who want to keep the installer (to avoid having to download it again) while not having it on your primary drive. If the drive it is on is mounted when you run the App Store updater, the App Store will find it and update it. This way if you need to update the installation, you have the latest installer.

On that note, it looks like from the warnings and popups from today's Xcode update, large applications which require updating the installer and not the app (like Xcode) will be delta updated in their installer. Then to actually update the installation, one will have to run the installer which then will update the installation.

So rest assured, moving that large installer out of the applications folder onto a secondary drive should work just fine.

[crarko adds: I haven't re-downloaded the Xcode installer to put on another drive to try this, but it would be a very sweet and intelligent updater if it works this way. Also, can people confirm if this works on any other App Store installed software? Please share your results in the comments.]

Unfortunately this does not seem to work for network drives. I need to copy Install Xcode.app to my main applications folder, only then does an update appear in the App Store app.

I noticed the same behavior with the Lion installer.

Not working for me in 10.6.8. My Lion installer is still in my Applications folder and I ran App Store to get the 10.7.1 update. Instead of use updating the installer, it's downloading the entire 4 GB 10.7.1 Lion installer.

Do you have to be running Lion for this to work?

Yes, it seems that you have to be running Lion to get the benefits of the "intelligent updates."

This seems to be because the App Store is scanning your Lion (and XCode) installs to see what components you need to update your installer, and whatever feature Apple has coded to do this is not present in Snow Leopard.

I have Lion installed (and updated to 10.7.1 via Software Update). The Lion 10.7 installer is still on my hard disk, although not in the Applications folder. App Store showed an update available, so I clicked "Update". The entire 3.5 GB 10.7.1 installer is now downloading, not just a delta update.

Ah, I was wondering if that would do it too but I no longer have the lion installer.

This is strictly a guess, but I'd bet that the MAS "finds" the installer using Spotlight so for this hint to work you probably need to have your other drive indexed. That would also explain why it doesn't work on networked drives as another person commented.

Not working here.

First, as mentioned already, it doesn't work when the installer is on a network drive. No update available, and purchased software says "Install" for Xcode.

So I connected the external drive that it's directly to my Mac. Purchased software tab recognized it, and the "Install" button is now "Update", but when clicked it tells me I need to login with the account I purchased it with (I am). No update available in the Update tab.

I had to copy the installer to my boot drive Applications folder for the update to become available.

this is how we also got around downloading the update when it came out on all the office machines for xcode. everyone grabbed it off the nas and worked perfect
