iOS5: Messages Hide Keyboard iOS devices
In previous versions of iOS whenever you looked at an SMS conversation the keyboard would obscure half the screen, and the only way to get it to disappear was to go to another conversation you hadn't responded to for awhile and then back into the one you wanted to read.

In iOS 5 all you have to do is drag the message down so that when your finger drags into the keyboard, the keyboard will drop out of the way.

[crarko adds: I've confirmed the new behavior, but I don't recall how 4.3 handled this. It certainly does seem a more intelligent method than the other.]

iOS 4.3 only hid the keyboard is you exited a conversation back to the list contacts and then re-entered the conversation. a jailbreak tweak was available which allowed you to hide the keyboard with a downward swipe in any program, but that behavior is different from the behavior built in to iOS 5.

Unfortunately, this doesn't work once the message gets too long. If it obscures the entire conversation view, there's nowhere to start dragging.

Specific to the Messages app, prior to iOS 5, the easiest way to hide the keyboard was to tap anywhere on the message thread (no visible response), exit to the conversations list, and then re-enter the thread. The keyboard will then be down.
