10.7: Four-Finger flip in Mail Apps
There was once a hint that worked for previous versions of Mail about three-fingered scrolling to flip through messages.

With Lion, the three-fingered flip now launches Mission Control, so navigating through Mail messages has changed to a FOUR-fingered flip. It took me a while to figure it out on the Magic Trackpad -- it seems to call for a little practice.

A flip Up/Left brings you to the next message up the list; a flip Down/Right brings you to the next message down.

[crarko adds: This is starting to take on the feel of learning to play a new musical instrument, which is not all bad, and possibly intentional on Apple's part.]

A careful reading shows they are slightly different ways of doing the same thing. I'll leave both.

Note that if you enable the three finger drag gesture, the Mission Control gesture is changed to four fingers, so this won't work. You can still use four fingers to navigate by holding down the option key and using the four finger gesture, but the direction is reversed (flicking up/left moves to previous, flicking down/right moves to next). I suspect it works that way because what you're really doing is moving the selection, not the content.

Read your suggestion about holding down the option key and doing a four-finger swipe to move from message to message.

Concluded that if I am to work both my four fingers and an additional finger for the option key, I may as well simplify the whole thing back to basics and use just one finger to work the 'up' and 'down' arrow keys...

Does not work for me

The four-finger flip does not work for me. I have not changed any of the default gestures on my MacBook Pro, but I do have Tap to Click enabled. Any clue about how to make it work?

Likewise (but I do not have tap to click turned on)

as a postscript....
Four-finger (or three-finger, depending on your setting) flip WITHOUT the option key only works on the Magic Trackpad (which I use for my iMac).
On the trackpad of the MacBook Pro, it looks like you NEED the option key pressed down.
Inconsistency....

The option key makes it work on my MacBook Pro, too, but it seems easier just to click on the next message. At least I can do that with just one hand!

I've just tried this, and I too am calling shenanigans. All the default gestures, and this does not work for me.
