10.7: See and manage full conversations in both message list and preview Apps
Mail's 'Include related messages' preference shows sent messages together with received in the preview pane, however it fails to show them in the message list. It also doesn't send them to the trash when deleting a thread.

I replaced Inbox in my favorites bar in Mail with Conversations, which is a smart mailbox containing all messages that are in Inbox or in Sent. Now, not only do I see related messages on the right, if I open a thread on the left, they're all there, too. Plus, when I'm done with a thread and I choose to delete it, all the related messages also get deleted, instead of sticking around in my Sent mailbox.

[crarko adds: Good use of a smart mailbox.]

Mail app in Lion for me groups related messages in preview as well as in message list. When I move messages from the list, dragging the one that nests all the thread (all the related messages), the thread is moved to Trash.

I would give this comment 10* if I could. You have solved a serious problem in the new Lion Mail. Include Related Messages is a powerful tool for viewing messages but not for filing.

It took me a minute to follow your train of thought so I will add a few notes here.

- Create a smart mail box showing that contains messages showing ANY of the following:
Message is in Mailbox INBOX
Message is in Mailbox SENT
- Label this smart mailbox (e.g.) Conversations

- in Preferences / Viewing turn on Include Related Messages

- Drag the smart mailbox Conversations to the lower portion of the toolbar in any location you want. If you put it first then CMD-1 will be it's shortcut.

This is very useful as it allows you to truly manage the conversations including delete, move and copy (I use MsgFiler for this). Without this hint the Sent Messages just hung around. Kudos!

Thank you for the great tip! I was trying to figure out how to keep deleted messages from conversation view. This totally helped.

I've been doing this since at least 10.5 (might have been 10.4) using Organise in/by Threads (the old name for Conversations), the difference in 10.7 over the previous versions is the google like showing of all the messages of a thread/conversation in the preview pane (where earlier would just list the member messages in the preview pain, until a message was selected), and the addition of showing related messages (not in the inbox/sent or any other folder being looked at by the smart folder) in the preview pane as well.

Never really thought of it as a hint, at least not till now.

One qualifier: In order to make this work you must select the checkbox "Include Sent Messages" in the "Edit Smart Mailbox" setup box.

This hint remains a bit cryptic and incomplete.
1) Part of the reason is due to the unexpected behavior of Mac Mail (Lion version).
If the "Conversations" smartbox were set up using any other mailbox, other than the Sent mailbox,
then all of the messages for that mailbox would be listed included as individual items in the smartbox.
Of course, by turning of the "View by Conversation" option, the messages from the Sent mailbox show up
as individual items as well. This seems puzzling at first, but it makes sense now, given that the
messages from the Sent mailbox have greater probability of having a conversation linkage to the
messages in the Inbox. I have many years of email, so messages from other mailboxes have a high probability
of being formed long before I started using Mac Mail Lion.

2) The beauty of this hint is that it does provide way of seeing the full conversation, including sent
messages. I think that this was the main reason that this hint has received favorable comments above.
But what is odd is that this issue, that Mac Mail Lion does not show sent messages in its conversation,
was not clearly stated at the beginning of the hint.

3) Another confusing issue concerns how "related messages" are treated. Let's make it clear that conversation
messages are those that add to the number shown in the right side of the item in the message list. If the
"Show Related Messages" option is selected (on the menu bar for a one-time selection, and in preferences for
permanent selection), then the preview to the right of the selected item in the message list will show
additional messages from all of your mail folders that might be related to the current conversation.
Mail has some algorithm for making this selection. This feature is really nice in that the additional
messages commonly are related but would otherwise be overlooked. The problem is that there is no way that
I have found to operate on more than one related message. You can try this out by finding a message that
shows only 1 message in its conversation but otherwise shows a bunch of messages in the preview. You will find
that you can select one message and move or delete it, but you cannot select a group of related messages in the
preview window. Of course if you delete the first message, which is the one listed in the message list,
the related messages all disappear from the preview because they no longer are related to the current item
in the message list. So, I have found that I can delete or move the related messages, but I have to do
it one at a time, starting from the bottom, not the top.

The hint discussed here claimed that it could be used to delete or remove groups of related messages.
I think that was meant to refer to groups of conversation messages. It does not provide a way to
operate on related messages.....

Does anyone have any suggestions towards that objective?
