10.7: Scrolling in Mail Apps
Snow Leopard had introduced a very cool function in mail where you could scroll through messages by swiping three fingers up or down. Unfortunately this function broke in Lion.

After a lot of trial and error testing, I found the same function has now been remapped to swiping three fingers left or right. Don't know why this changed, but am happy that I do not have to shift between the trackpad and keyboard to read my mails.

Also pressing 'Space' takes you to the next message.

[crarko adds: What I found is that pressing the Spacebar will scroll down by pages in the current message, and then when the end is reached progress on to the next message.]

Scrolling through messages with space (and back up with shift+space) worked since ages.

There is a major feature missing from this hint - you HAVE to hold down alt / option. Swiping left / right on my MPB switches desktops.

if you change "Swipe between full-screen apps" to four fingers in the Trackpad preferences, you can then use the three finger gesture to switch mail messages without pressing the option key.

This hint doesn't make sense since swiping with three fingers left or right in Lion moves between full-screen apps, both in Mail and in all other apps. Has this person changed the gesture for moving between full-screen apps?

And, as as the previous commenter suggested, holding the option (alt) key once again allows you to scroll your message folder with three finger swipes up and down (not just left and right).

Four fingers is the answer
Scrolling up or down with four fingers works to jump to the next/previous message regardless of where you are in the message you are reading.

And, <shift>-Space scrolls messages the other direction.

Holding option and swiping up/down works as well.

I prefer scrolling through my mail using the arrow keys: when you have View > Organize by Conversation checked, you can work your way down the list of messages with the up/down arrow keys, expand a conversation with the right-arrow and continue through that conversation with the down arrow. To collapse the conversation, use the left-arrow.

Hi all - my fault - in the hint I forgot to mention that I had changed "swipe between full screen apps" to swipe with four fingers.

Cool bananas. May I suggest the original entry be edited to mention holding down Alt/Option, as this is essential when using Lion, since three-finger swipe to switch spaces is on by default, AFAIK.

There must be something very particular about this feature in Mail.

Personally, I find with my Magic Trackpad, a new iMac, and the settings I've established in trackpad preferences, none of these suggestions work. Not swiping, not holding option, not using the space bar. And I've experimented quickly with changing the trackpad preferences to other settings and it does not, for me, change the behavior in Mail. I find nothing that actually switches between messages except using the up-down arrow keys in the three pain view.

I don't feel motivated to test this more methodically, and I don't doubt what others have found, but there appears to be more to this feature than is immediately obvious.
