10.7: Change mouse scrollwheel direction only System 10.7
So you are trying to live with the 'upside-down' world of Lion, and it works OK with the trackpad on your laptop but not with your wheel-mouse? Take a closer look at the shareware utility USB Overdrive.

With USB Overdrive, it is possible to alter any button on any input device like your mouse, and you can define specifics for a particular mouse or input device to suit your need.

All I did was to alter Wheel up and Wheel down for my mouse to be the opposite direction, so that Wheel up is 'down' and Wheel down is 'up,' and I can still retain the regular behavior for other devices.

[crarko adds: USB Overdrive has been handy for many years, and it's nice to see it still is.]

nice tip and all that but and it's a very big but, usboverdrive causes a conflict with the magic trackpad.

the trackpad won't work with the app installed let alone running.

USB Overdrive doesn't work in any system with a Bluetooth Magic Mouse -- it requires a USB-connected mouse. The trackpad must use the same technology as the MM; just a bigger surface.

USB Overdrive was updated years ago to add support for bluetooth mice.

Razer Mice

Those of us with Razer mice that offer official Mac drivers can also revert the scrolling in the Razer prefpane. At least it's possible to do so with the Razer Orochi. In the "Buttons" tab there is two "Mousewheel Options" pop up buttons which you can use to revert scrolling.

The fact that you can't do this without a utility in a bug, right?

There's a preference under "Mouse" that says "Move content in the direction of finger movement when scrolling or navigating" (checked = inverted scroll) and one under "Trackpad" that says "Scroll direction: natural - Content tracks finger movement" (again, checked = inverted scroll). I should be able to use these two options independently to choose to invert the trackpad and not the mouse wheel or vice versa. Although, checking either option will automatically check the other option when you close System Preferences. Anyone else experiencing this bug?

Yes, but upon checking the checkbox of the trackpad, you can uncheck the mouse again and then it will stick.
(one of the many Lion bugs... ;) ).

I've found that it only sticks until I close System Preferences. I hope 10.7.1 isn't too far off.

Why not use the built-in preferences for this? A lot easier and no other software needed.
Open the Mouse prefs and uncheck 'Move content in the direction of finger movement when scrolling or navigating'

Yes... USB Overdrive does it again!

I've been using USB Overdrive for around a decade and can't say enough about it. It's one of the first apps I install on a new system and works flawlessly with my Logitech Performance MX cordless mouse. And as you've shown... just keeps on 'giving.'

I love USB Overdrive and have used it for many years,b ut I had to get rid of it to enable magic trackpad.

However, I don't think you need USB Overdrive to accomplish this. In the Mouse system preferences, there is a checkbox at the top that says 'scroll content in the direction of mouse wheel' or something. This changes the behavior for the mouse wheel, but not track pad.

Frankly, as much as I used to love USB overdrive, I'd be inclined to avoid it these days. It's not been updated since 2009 and the developer isn't responding to emails any more. He used to be very responsive, so it's a bit concerning.

Since USB Overdrive is still working flawlessly in Lion, I see no valid reason to give it up at this time.
