10.7: Safari gestures for forward and back Web Browsers
Here's a quick way to go back and forward while using Safari on OSX Lion (10.7). It also allows you to peek at the webpage that you were on previously.

While using Safari in Lion, use the two finger left or right swipe will take you back or forward, respectively (the direction will be dependent on whether you use natural or reverse scrolling -- I use reverse scrolling). Doing the gesture slowly will give you a peek instead of doing a full back or forward.

[crarko adds: The trackpad on my old MacBook doesn't support these gestures, but if you have a newer machine give this a try, and post results in the comments if you want.]

If you have a Magic Mouse go to System Preferences>Mouse>More Gestures where you can set Swipe Between Pages to one or two fingers. It's a great way to navigate back and forth through Safari. This only seems to work in Safari.

If you hold Alt / Option, your gestures work - forwards / backwords in both Safari and Finder - using the trackpad on the machine. Using four fingers will get your gestures back on the Magic Trackpad. --- MacBook Pro 15" Aluminum Unibody 2.8 Chris Wanja chris.wanja@mac.com

Nice find. Holding option reverses the setting for three fingers. If three fingers are set to navigate, holding option will make three fingers change space. If three fingers are set to change space, holding option will allow you to navigate with them.

It was amazing when I found it. I was like "yipee!" but it is still so annoying that this has to be done. Thought about submitting a hint in addition to this one, but I will just leave it as a comment.

It's in the System Preferences/Trackpad/More Gestures options.

It also works in Google Chrome Canary, but without the animations.

This is an amazing feature. Found it 24 hours ago, and already can't remember how anyone ever stood to use "back" buttons. Probably the first genuine "delight" of Lion's new gestures.
