A simple hint -- double tap a word with 3 fingers to get a pop-over with dictionary and thesaurus definition! Works in most apps.

crarko: If you got that menu, it means that two fingers hit the touch pad before the third did. If all three hit at the same time, you get the definition.
Also, that spinning beach ball is only momentary, and only the first time you try to spell check the word.

It took me a few tries to get it to work. The problem for me was that I was double clicking with three fingers instead of double tapping. Once I realized that it worked just fine

10.7: Double Tap for Dictionary definition
My impression of TextEdit is that it is very buggy. The app crashed on me attempting to simply explore it's new features. Mind you this was only a couple of minutes of use.

You may need to turn it on in System Preferences->Trackpad->Point & Click->Look up.

In Safari at lest, you can just hover the pointer over a word and use the Option, Command, and d keys (all at the same time) to get a dictionary deffinition

As an aside, the classic Control-Command-D still works, but it now looks and behaves exactly the same way the trackpad-based method does.

Also, make sure the cursor is the insertion point (not the mouse pointer/arrow) and make sure to tap (not click). ---

10.7: Double Tap for Dictionary definition
When I tried to do this in Safari, I had to have the word selected first - it wouldn't just work off of a triple-fingered double-click (hah!). I had to double-click a word, then triple-fingered double-click.
10.7: Double Tap for Dictionary definition
Oh dear, how embarrassing - I found that I could indeed triple-finger tap without selecting first. I just had to go easy on the trackpad.

The older MacBook and MacBook Pro do not support three finger gestures. To get the dictionary on these machine you can always fall back on
Ctrl Command D

Is there any documentation showing the equivalent keystrokes for the gestures? I think Apple could implement the extra fingers in the magic trackpad by use of keys like control, option and command. Like 3 fingers tap = Option + 2 fingers tap. For sure I am not going to buy a magic trackpad to use with a laptop.

Works fine for me. Three finger double tap isn't the most graceful, but you get used to it. I guess maybe because I play piano it comes easier. A lot of the new gestures take a little bit to learn, just technique-wise, but they work great once you do, a lot of things are right at your fingertips now.

Oddly enough, I absolutely cannot get this to work. I've tried turning the feature on and off, tried it with tap-to-click on and off, tried first double clicking the word followed by the three fingered tap, and have tried in Safari, Chrome, and TextEdit. I also notice that the three-fingered-drag option does not work for me. All other gestures work fine though, and this is on the latest generation 17" MacBook Pro. Also, three fingered gestures worked just fine in Snow Leopard, but nothing now... any ideas?

Nice to discover that the three-finger Look-up also works for text documents viewed in Quick Look as well!

When I try this, it sends me to another space, but when I come back to the original space, the Dictionary popup is visible. ---
