10.6: Option-click audio menu extra to choose source System 10.6
Snow Leopard only hintIf you want an easy way to change the input or output sound source on your mac (say between the internal microphone and audio-in) in Mac OSX Snow Leopard you can simply option-click on the audio menu-extra in your menu bar.

This hint is actually from commenter Monoclast on MacUpdate.com from a review on the program SoundSource which adds a new Menu Extra to do exactly this.

[crarko adds: I tested this, and it works as described.]

On my system at least, this has to be redone after every re-boot (I have digital audio selected, but after rebooting, sound output reverts to LED Cinema). A decidedly minor irritation, but still involves a click

Actually, many of Apple's Menu Extras provide more information or different settings when clicked with the option key held down. Try it with MobileMe Sync, Time Machine, Bluetooth and AirPort.

Now, if only the Sound preference panel (or whatever the cause) would stop changing my microphone input volume down to 50% or lower every time I start recording, I'd be completely happy.

Anyone know how to deal with this? I *think* keeping Sound closed and running Audio MIDI Setup instead works, but not certain.
