10.7: Change the login screen background image System 10.7
You can customize the Lion Login screen background image. This hint shows where to find it.

After doing some research (thanks to 'EasyFind' that looks inside packages), I found the original file that is used for the login texture background image in Lion.

The file is called NSTexturedFullScreenBackgroundColor.png, and the path to get to it is:

/System/Library/Frameworks/AppKit.framework/Versions/C/Resources.

It is a 256 × 256 PNG image, so if you want to try replacing it that's what you should use. I uploaded a screenshot of the path to the file here.

[crarko adds: Have a bit of caution when changing a file like this used by the system. Mostly make sure you have a good backup around, and don't be too surprised if some software update reverts back to the original image.]

I believe you can change the image to anything you want provided that it is: 1) png format 2) matches your current screen resolution 3) 72 dpi resolution. My information is based these results from a search of the internet:

I have successfully tested this for a desired custom graphic... but I'm really hoping that Apple allows us to change the login background again in the not too distant future. Unfortunately, I have a feeling that there will probably be "an app for that" which you get to buy from the App Store.

I plugged in a photo I was using in SnowLeopard and previous systems (.png format -- I'm guessing any other compatible image, jpg, tif, would also work?) and it looks fine. The older systems scaled the "DefaultDesktop" image to fill the screen, while Lion seems to present it in muted tones, pixel-for-pixel, centered. Being larger than the screen on my MBP, it is cropped but at least it's not that boring gray field. After replacing "NSTexturedFullScreenBackgroundColor.png", that's what appears at login. After waking from sleep, the previous desktop background image is shown behind the login icon as before.

Also if your company needs a SOX compliant banner and you want it to look purdy:

I originally used the solution
http://www.afp548.com/article.php?story=lion-policy-banner
and made it look okay with an image, but then I tried to log on with a user from our AD domained/bound accounts.

We have a .local domain which causes crazy long login times, up to 3 minutes (see my other post we, also have a call in with apple)
because the Policy Banner is set to re-appear after 30 seconds of inactivity it would nullify the attempted login for AD users

So I found another way
Replace:
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/LoginUIKit.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LoginUICore.framework/Versions/A/Resources/appleLinen.original.png

with a large resolution file (we use 1024x768) that has a transparent background (has to be png)
I put my text as well as the apple log in the middle and fiddled with the location of both of them until it looks nice above the username/password fields

Thanks!

Has anyone found the linen texture for the 10.7.4 update? My custom linen gesture is still there but the login screen is the standard grey linen.
